Then ~ The Oceanview Hotel was the largest hotel on Block Island built in 1872. It was the result of a successful California Gold Rush by Nicholas Ball who's relatives still live on the island today. "President Ulysses S. Grant stayed at the Oceanview Hotel and held a special session with the U.S. Supreme Court so its members would not have to interrupt their vacations by returning to Washington."(BITC) It burned to the ground in 1966.
Now ~ The Oceanview Pavillion is the home sight of some of the largest catch and release birdbanding programs on the east coast. Young Block Island students anually maintain the gardens that have been built within the remaining foundation of the Oceanview Hotel. Birdhouses are scattered around the property in hopes of attracting natural wildlife as well as to house migrating species who make a pit stop on Block Island.
